Café Assistant

Honister Slate Mine are looking for a friendly new café assistant, vacancies are available for full and part time contracts.

Our busy little café is sited at the top of Honister Pass, business hours are from 08.00/09.00 and fluctuate from 17.00/18.00 dependant of the seasons – so you have your evenings to yourself.

We pride ourselves on our homemade cakes, hearty soup and welcoming atmosphere. Our customers range from thrill seeking adventurers, families from the tours, walkers and cyclists taking on one of the best hill climbs in the UK, or even customers taking refuge from the typical Lake District weather! Our produce is no frills, simple but proper food with big wedges of cake and freshly ground coffee.

All training is available on-site and given by our team however a willingness to learn is needed.

You will be expected to work weekends and school holidays due to the tourism industry.

Transport is essential for this role; however, we can offer staff-accommodation nestled in the heart Seatoller for full time staff and during peak season we are on the 77A bus route.

Retail Assistant

Are you passionate about The Lake District & it’s history? Made in Britain? Local handcrafted products?

We are looking for someone who not only ticks the above boxes but won’t be afraid to get creative in this role, someone who will work hard and bring fresh new ideas to the table, not only for our bespoke handmade on-site products but for our luxury homeware & gift products also sold on site.

Our onsite shop at Honister is filled with beautiful, handcrafted products made from Green Slate mined from deep inside Fleetwith Pike less than 500m from the shop along with many other luxury homewares & quirky handpicked goods.

To be successful in this role you will need to be willing to immerge yourself in Honister’s rich industrial history, Being the last working slate mine in England we are visited by many tourists and visitors alike looking to take home their own part of a lake district mountain and you will be part of the team guiding them through their purchase.

Other responsibilities include customer service with a warm friendly smile, being part of a team unpacking deliveries, stock checks, bespoke sign orders, general housekeeping of the shop front and back of house.

You will need to be responsible for your own transport to work.

This role is available as full time or part time with immediate start available. This could also be paired with our mine tour guide role and work on a split of shop assistant days/mine tour guide days. 


Stonemason / Craftsman

Honister Slate Mine is the last working Slate Mine in England and we are looking to expand our team and welcome a new team member to our workshop.

We are based at the summit of Honister pass and we have a fully operational slate mine working 7 days a week to keep up with demand for this unique volcanic slate with its rich deep green hue. Our customers are both trade and public, all looking to have a part of a Lake District Mountain as part of their project.

Our time served craftsmen work alongside this magnificent stone to produce a wide range of goods, from kitchen worktops, fire hearths, dining products and accessories to headstones, garden benches, house signs, aggregates, and flooring plus many more bespoke items in both commercial and residential projects. We love a challenge and take immense pride in not just the quality of the stone we work alongside but, in the craftsmanship and care put into producing these items.

We ask that you come with a strong work ethic, common sense, and a desire to learn along with efficient time keeping and a drive to succeed whilst also being trusted to work independently to time deadlines with good communication skills.

All training will be provided onsite, and no experience is needed however you will need to be physically fit due to the labour-intensive nature of this role.

Your duties will include cutting, slabbing, and polishing stone, working on bespoke items with customised measurements, and working in a stone masons workshop environment.

Any of the below skills are an advantage to succeed in this role however not compulsory:

  • Using hand and power tools to shape, trim, cut stones and polish slate
  • Experience with slate and/or wood
  • Working as a team and self-managed.
  • Can work under pressure
  • Forklift and heavy plant experience
  • A valid UK driving license held for three years and more.
  • Full time position and weekends, pay depends on your experience
  • Accommodation can also be provided for full time position

Mine Tour Guide

We are looking for someone passionate about the Lake District, history and working with people.

Honister slate mine needs an enthusiastic tour guide to lead visitors on our much-loved mine tours. Take groups of all ages, from all walks of life into the mountain to not only explore the subterranean world of mine caverns and tunnels, but to tell the fascinating story of Honister.

Our story stretches back over 400 years; Outliving Victorian miners, pioneering industrial revolutions, and remaining steadfast through world wars through to the present day.

Honister Slate Mine has both earnt and truly secured its place in the history books providing slate to some of the most prestigious buildings in the UK. Whilst also diversifying over the past 20 years to provide a multitude of adrenaline activities alongside our mine tours and fully operational slate mine.

We don’t expect you to be a fountain of knowledge on all things Honister just yet! We just ask that you come with a passion and hunger to learn our story and to tell it with the same genuine passion and appreciation our guides have over the years; Making us a place families fondly come back to through all generations year after year.

This role is available as a full time or part time role, we run tours 7 days a week up to 4 times daily.
