How to Get to
Honister Slate Mine

Honister Slate Mine can be found along Honister Pass – one of the Lake District’s most iconic and scenic mountain passes. The drive alone is worth the visit, with dramatic views, twisting roads and unforgettable panoramas around every bend.

Honister is also the perfect base for walkers heading out onto the fells – with direct access to Haystacks, Fleetwith Pike, Great Gable and more right from our doorstep. With on-site parking, a cosy café and a slate shop, it’s the ideal place to start (or finish) a day in the fells.

Here’s everything you need to know about how to get to Honister – by car, bus, or boot.

Public Transport

We strongly encourage visitors to use public transport where possible to help protect the landscape and reduce traffic along the pass.

The Stagecoach 77A – known as The Honister Rambler – stops right on our doorstep. It’s a spectacular route and one of the most scenic bus journeys in the country, travelling through Keswick, Seatoller and Buttermere. Using the 77A is a fantastic way to enjoy the landscape stress-free and support sustainable tourism in the Lake District.

Parking Info

On-site parking is available all day for just £5. This helps us maintain our facilities and support the conservation of the surrounding area. Anyone booked on our activities does not have to pay for parking, but must still display a parking ticket.

Parking tickets need to be obtained in our slate shop – through the main entrance, through the tunnel, then turn left. Or follow the signs for shop.

On Foot or By Bike

Feeling adventurous? You can also reach us on foot via the Coast to Coast route or by bike (if you’re up for the climb!). We’re a great pit stop for hikers and cyclists exploring the Lake District fells.
