An outline of Honister’s commitment and strategy towards all areas of sustainability
Honister is a family-run business that has been operating since 2002 in the heart of the Lake District. The company has a strong commitment to improving sustainability where possible and has been focused on some key projects over the last few years to work towards reducing its impact on the environment.
One of the key elements of Honister’s sustainability policy is to reduce its carbon footprint. To achieve this, the company is investing heavily in renewable energy sources such as hydroelectric power and solar panels, which it hopes will provide around 75% of the energy required for running the visitor centre, office and workshop. This is a huge project and investment that they are aiming to complete by January 2024.
Honister Slate Mine takes a proactive approach to waste management. The company recycles waste materials, such as slate dust and off-cuts, and has implemented a closed-loop system where any waste is reused or repurposed.
Honister Slate Mine also supports the local community and economy by providing jobs for local people and sourcing materials from local suppliers wherever possible.
The Bait Cabin Café produces homecooked meals and cakes using some of the finest, locally sourced ingredients that the Lake District has to offer.
Honister supports small local artists by exhibiting their products in the slate gallery and shop as well as selling various artisan products, such as hand soaps, candles and decor.
Honister Slate Mine has a strong commitment to minimising the company’s impact on the environment and ensuring that its operations are sustainable for future generations.
