Vintage rally cars take on Lake District mountain challenge

An annual favourite, over 100 exquisite examples of vintage sports cars from the 1920s and 30s will take on the challenge of the steep quarry road that leads up the side of Fleetwith Pike at Honister Slate Mine on Saturday 9 November.

Spectators are welcome at Honister Slate Mine, the only official viewing location for the rally, which provides the perfect setting to capture photographs of the cars on the day. The assembled vehicles will feature top classic racing cars including a 1920’s Bugatti Type 23, a 1927 Austin 7 and a 1930’s Chrysler 66 Sports.

Following a classic cruise through the spectacular landscape of the Lake District the drivers will assemble at the foot of Honister Pass, one of the highest roads in Cumbria with a gradient of 1-in-4 (25%) before making the ascent. Natural hazards include the snaking bends and Herdwick sheep roaming the open fells. Once at Honister Slate Mine they’ll assemble to be scrutinised to ensure road worthiness and correct vintage, before attempting the mine track, putting their skills to the test on the uneven surface and steep climb more familiar with Land Drovers than sports cars.

The 4-stage event is organised by the Vintage Sports Car Club and takes in spectacular scenery around Buttermere and Keswick.

Joe Weir, Co-owner of Honister Slate Mine, says, ‘Each year it’s a fantastic event. I love hearing the sound of the different engines revving as they take on our track. The cars are such beautiful examples of fine crafted engineering. It’s grand seeing all the people who brave the elements to come to watch on the day, from families to motoring enthusiasts.

Vehicles will be arriving at Honister Slate Mine – England’s oldest working slate mine and year round heritage and adventure attraction from 8am onwards on Saturday 9 November 2019. Honister Slate Mine’s café will be open and serving hearty soup, homemade cakes, and hot drinks.
