Preparing for Your Visit to Honister Slate Mine

Whether you’re here for an adrenaline adventure, an underground mine tour, or a scenic walk from our doorstep, a little preparation can make all the difference to your Honister experience.

Our location at the top of Honister Pass means stunning views and dramatic landscapes – but also rapidly changing weather and steep mountain roads. Here’s what to know before you set off.

What to Wear

The weather in the Lake District is famously unpredictable, especially at altitude, so it’s always best to come prepared for all conditions.

We recommend:

  • Layered clothing – breathable base layers, a warm mid-layer, and a waterproof outer shell
  • Waterproof jacket and trousers – even on a dry day, rain can appear suddenly
  • Sturdy footwear – walking boots or shoes with good grip are essential, especially for outdoor or underground activities
  • Hat and gloves – even in summer, it can be chilly at the summit
  • Sun protection – sunscreen and sunglasses on brighter days

For adrenaline activities like Climb the Mine, Infinity Bridge, or The Jump, specific kit will be provided, but you must come dressed appropriately underneath (no skirts, sandals, or loose clothing). Honister reserves the right to refuse activity participation to anyone who is not dressed appropriately.

For Canyoning & All Day Adrenaline Pass

Canyoning is a full-on water adventure – so be ready to get soaked! We’ll provide all the specialist kit you need, including wetsuits, helmets, harnesses, and buoyancy aids.

You’ll need to bring:

  • Swimwear to wear underneath your wetsuit

  • A towel

  • A warm change of clothes for afterwards

  • Trainers with good grip – these will get wet, so make sure they’re comfy!

  • Shorts to wear over your wetsuit (optional but recommended for comfort)

Changing facilities are available on site.

Even if you’re joining us for a full day of adrenaline activities, it’s worth packing a few spares – dry socks and an extra layer go a long way!

Arrive Early – Allow Plenty of Time

We strongly advise arriving at least 30 minutes before your booked activity.

This gives you time to:

  • Park your vehicle & obtain a parking ticket
  • Use the facilities
  • Complete your activity waiver (this must be done on-site at reception)

Late arrivals may miss their slot and we cannot guarantee rebooking.

Travel times in the Lake District can be longer than expected due to narrow roads, slow-moving traffic and weather. Please plan ahead and leave extra time for your journey.
