Lake District Haunted Mine Opens for Ghost Tours

This October, visitors to the Lake District can step deep inside a real slate mine to discover a different kind of history. Honister, England’s last working slate mine, has launched Honister Ghost Tours – an atmospheric underground walking tour sharing haunting tales of real lives, loss and legends that linger in the dark.

Running from Wednesday 22nd October to Saturday 1st November only, this unique experience takes guests through Honister’s ancient hand-carved tunnels and hidden caverns, deep beneath Fleetwith Pike. Guided by lantern light, storytellers lead visitors through the mine’s cold passageways, recounting generations-old stories passed down from the miners who worked these tunnels – from the mysterious “Lost Level” to the chilling tale of the Grey Lady said to roam the depths.

Unlike typical ghost tours, this isn’t a staged scare attraction – it’s a raw, spine-tingling journey through Cumbrian mining heritage, combining folklore and fact in one of the most atmospheric settings in the Lake District. The recommended age is 10+.

Honister Slate Mine, located at the head of Honister Pass near Keswick, is already known for its adrenaline-fuelled adventures and rich industrial past. The new Ghost Tours offer something entirely different: a chance to connect with the people and stories that shaped the region, in a place where echoes of history still linger.

Tickets are limited and expected to sell quickly.
