At Honister Slate Mine, we are committed to preserving our rich industrial heritage while also investing in the future. Since June 2019, we have been working closely with local primary schools to deliver hands-on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) educational experiences, inspiring young minds and fostering closer relationships between industry and education.
A Unique Learning Experience
So far, around 120 students from four Cumbrian schools have taken part in engaging sessions, offering them a glimpse into the fascinating world of slate mining—both past and present. In partnership with Primary Business Partnership and local educators, we have created a unique learning opportunity that brings classroom subjects to life through real-world applications.
Tailored STEM Learning Resources
To complement these aspiration sessions, our education team at Honister has developed a flexible set of STEM learning resources designed for KS1 and KS2 pupils. These resources focus on three key areas:
- Social History & Industry – Where did Moses Rigg tread and why? explores the lives of miners throughout history and their contributions to the industry.
- Economics – Mountains, Miners, and Mark examines entrepreneurship, past and present, giving students insight into how industries evolve over time.
- Geography & Geology – Metamorphic Sandwich Filling delves into the unique geological history of the Lake District and the formation of Westmorland Green Slate.
These sessions can be delivered both in schools and on-site at Honister, where students can experience the thrill of a guided mine tour, stepping into the depths of England’s last working slate mine.
Honister’s Commitment to Education
Prentice WILKINSON-WEIR, Director of Honister Slate Mine, shared our motivation for launching this initiative:
“Working with local schools has been something we’ve wanted to do for a long time. By developing these STEM learning resources, we aim to support teachers in the classroom and offer young people real industry role models. Our goal is to spark curiosity and provide valuable insights into careers in geology, geography, history, and industry.”
Engaging Young Minds
To date, pupils from Borrowdale, Paddle Eaglesfield, Dearham, and Gosforth primary schools have enjoyed these interactive sessions led by our education lead, Tori Jones. The response has been overwhelmingly positive, and we are excited to continue the programme with future sessions scheduled for Bothel and Plumbland schools.
We still have availability for December and beyond. Teachers interested in incorporating these experiences into their curriculum can get in touch with the Honister Learning Team or Primary Business Partnerships to find out more.
More Than Just a Mine Tour
In addition to our STEM programme, our Honister Mine Tours offer an unforgettable experience for visitors of all ages. Delve into the history of slate mining, explore the atmospheric tunnels of Fleetwith Pike, and discover the centuries-old traditions of an industry that has shaped the Lake District. Plus, with our Kids Go Free offer, there has never been a better time for families to experience this unique underground adventure.
