2025 Bowels of Fleetwith Fell Race Winners & Highlights

On Saturday 5th July 2025, Honister Slate Mine hosted the fifth edition of the Bowels of Fleetwith Fell Race. Set against the dramatic backdrop of the Lake District’s rugged fells and the dark, twisting tunnels beneath Fleetwith Pike, this one-of-a-kind fell race welcomed 150 runners ready to take on a challenge like no other.

A Race Unlike Anything Else

More than just a fell run, the Bowels of Fleetwith offers a uniquely thrilling twist: a 1km underground section through Honister’s historic slate mine tunnels. After a steep uphill start from the mine yard, runners don helmets and head torches before disappearing into the depths of Fleetwith, navigating narrow passageways rarely seen by the public.

From there, competitors emerge partway up the fell, tackle the summit of Fleetwith Pike (648m), traverse across to Grey Knotts (697m), and finally descend to the finish line back at Honister Slate Mine. The total route covers approximately 6km with a challenging 1,500 metres of ascent, blending mountain grit with subterranean adventure.

The 2025 event delivered a brilliant showcase of determination, grit, and fell-running spirit.. We extend our congratulations to every runner who took on this unique challenge, whether chasing a podium spot or simply testing their limits in a setting like no other.
