We’re incredibly proud to announce that Honister Slate Mine has been shortlisted for not just one, but two prestigious Cumbria Tourism Awards this year!
As England’s last working slate mine, a champion of adventure tourism, and a proud protector of a red list heritage craft skill, this recognition is a monumental moment for our family-run business.
What We’ve Been Shortlisted For:
Large Visitor Attraction of the Year 2025
This award celebrates the best large-scale attractions in Cumbria, recognising those that deliver outstanding visitor experiences, customer service, and showcase the very best of what our region has to offer. From adrenaline adventures on the Infinity Bridge and Via Ferrata to exploring ancient mine tunnels – we’re honoured to be recognised in this category.
Experience of the Year 2025 (Guided Mine Tours)
Our Guided Mine Tours have been shortlisted for delivering a truly unique, immersive experience. It’s more than just a tour – it’s a journey deep into the heart of Fleetwith Pike and the rich mining heritage that shaped the landscape. Visitors connect with 450 million years of geology, history, and the stories of generations of Cumbrian miners. A real adventure for all ages!
About the Cumbria Tourism Awards
The Cumbria Tourism Awards celebrate the very best of the county’s visitor economy – from outstanding attractions and unique experiences to top hospitality and customer care. Judged against strict VisitEngland criteria, these awards shine a spotlight on businesses that go above and beyond to make Cumbria a world-class destination.
Winners will be announced at a black-tie celebration on 8th July 2025 at Castle Green Hotel. If successful, we’ll have the honour of representing Cumbria at the national VisitEngland Awards! How exciting!
A Monumental Year for Honister
With the recent approval of our long-awaited zip wire project after 15 years of dedication, 2025 is already shaping up to be a landmark year for us. Being recognised in these two categories is a testament to our team’s passion for keeping Cumbria’s heritage alive while offering unforgettable adventures to help people connect with the Lake District landscape in a unique and safe way.
We’d like to say a heartfelt thank you to everyone who’s supported us – whether you’ve climbed the mine, crossed the Infinity Bridge, joined a tour, or simply stopped by for a brew. This is for you, too!
Stay tuned… and keep your fingers crossed for July!
