For a limited time this October, join us at Honister Slate Mine and go underground for an eerie, atmospheric journey by lantern light – where ghostly legends and true tales from Honister’s past come to life.
Guided by torchlight through winding tunnels and ancient chambers, you’ll hear chilling stories of The phantom miner still tapping in the darkness, hear disembodied voices whispering from those who never left, stories of The Grey Lady and the cursed tunnel where the air grows cold.
Drawn from real events and stories passed down through generations of miners, these tales preserve the memory of those who worked and sometimes lost their lives inside this iconic Lake District mountain.
This is not your average ghost tour – it’s immersive, spine-tingling and rooted in true Cumbrian history.

Unfortunately, due to the uneven terrain and steep steps, the mine tours are not wheelchair accessible. However, we welcome all visitors, and our café and visitor centre are fully accessible. For more information or if you have specific requirements, please contact us.
Mostly ground level as you go into the mine horizontally, the mines in Honister crag span 10+ miles, created through over 250 years of mining.
We recommend wearing warm, waterproof clothing and sturdy footwear for the mine tour. As some areas involve climbing steps and walking on uneven ground, suitable footwear is essential for safety and comfort.
Yes! Our mine tours are suitable for families and visitors of all ages. *Kids go free with a paying adult, making it a fantastic value for family outings. Whether you’re bringing younger children or older family members, the tour offers an exciting and educational adventure for everyone.
Absolutely! The tour is designed to be a safe and enjoyable experience for children. However, it’s important to note that the underground environment can be dimly lit and the terrain is uneven, so we recommend supervising younger children throughout the tour.
While we do allow on-site ticket purchases, we recommend booking in advance, especially during peak seasons, to ensure availability and avoid disappointment. Booking in advance guarantees you a spot and helps streamline your visit.
Yes, we have ample parking on-site
The mine is open year-round, offering a unique experience in every season. If you prefer fewer crowds, we recommend visiting during the off-peak months (autumn or winter). However, summer offers beautiful views and a vibrant atmosphere in the surrounding Lake District.
Due to the uneven terrain and steps throughout the mine, prams and back baby carriers are not permitted on the tour for safety reasons. If you’re visiting with a baby, we recommend using a front carrier instead. If you have any specific concerns or accessibility queries, please feel free to contact us before your visit.
