You'll follow the original path that hardy quarrymen took to the top of Honister Crag — and feel a slightly mad sort of freedom as the ground falls away on all sides.
Hand over hand up sturdy iron rungs, ladders and cables. A sea of mountain peaks in every direction. The summit waiting at the top. Our experienced team guides you safely through the whole thing — you're attached to a secure series of anchors and cables every step of the way. Adrenaline is the feature. Risk is not.

What to expect
From the car park to the summit. Here's how the day unfolds.
Step 1
Get fitted. Get briefed. Get ready.
Check in 30 minutes before your session. Your guide fits you with harness, helmet and lanyard system and walks you through everything before you set foot on the rock.
Step 2
The mountain comes into view
Your guide leads you out onto Fleetwith Pike. The route opens up ahead of you, iron rungs, steel cables and the same path Victorian quarrymen walked to work every morning.
Step 3
Hand over hand. Higher and higher
Ladders, rungs and cables take you up the face of the crag. The valley floor drops away. Mountain peaks appear in every direction. Clipped in throughout, it's the exposure that gets your pulse going, not the danger.
Step 4
Summit & smile
You reach the top and it hits you all at once, the views, the silence, the realisation that you just climbed that. You'll stand there for longer than you planned. You've earned it.

The term via ferrata comes from the Italian for ‘iron ways’. You will follow ladders, metal footholds, cables and bridges all while securely attached. This makes it a thrilling, but safe, introduction to mountain climbing. Our via ferrata follows the historic miners’ path onto Fleetwith Pike, surrounded by the most spectacular views the Lake District has to offer.
The via ferrata can be seen from a distance from a layby on the Buttermere side of the pass (binoculars recommended and weather permitting).
You must use Honister’s equipment due to our strict equipment maintenance and testing. We provide the helmet, harness and lanyard system required.
Our experienced guides are on hand to assist and are fully trained to deal with any situation. We will guide you safely through the experience at all times.
Via ferrata is Italian for ‘iron way’.
Unlike climbing or bouldering, via ferrata routes use metal rails and rungs embedded into the mountain. They require simple equipment and a good head for heights, making it possible to climb otherwise impossible cliffs.
You will be guided over the via ferrata by our experienced team who have received full external and internal training to lead groups.
Participation must be part of a supervised group with an internally trained guide. It is strictly forbidden to access any part of the route without a guide.
For safety, we have a strict restriction of 18 Stone (114KG), with a waist measuring no more than 43 inches and thighs less than 27 inches.
Minimum participation age is 10 years. Participants must be 1.3m tall.
Children (10 years – 15 years) must always be accompanied by an adult (16 +) on any activity.
One adult may supervise up to 5 under 16’s. They must be prepared to sign a disclaimer accepting responsibility for the children.
On average, 3 hours.
Cameras and phones are not permitted on the via ferrata. You must be able to use both hands while climbing.
GoPro’s may be used if attached to a helmet, or via a chest mount. This must be checked by the guide.
Some of our helmets have mount attachments for GoPros. These are available on a first-come, first-served basis. They cannot be handheld or attached to wrists or clothing.
