THE STORY

A Christmas adventure like no other

Once upon a time, somewhere in the Lake District, there was a place the busy world had forgotten. Only the elves knew it, and the creatures who lived in the dark beneath the mountains. And it was here, in the old tunnels of Honister Slate Mine, that Father Christmas came to hide away through the coldest weeks of winter.

For a few short weeks each year, the door opens, and you're invited in.

THE ADVENTURE

The journey begins

When you arrive, Santa's Chief Elf is there to meet you. Merry, a little mischievous, and full of secrets, they'll get you kitted out and ready to go. Then everyone piles onto the Honister bus for the ride up the mountain, along a road that twists higher and higher above the fells. By the last bend, the children usually know something special is coming.

Into the mountain

Your elf leads you in through tunnels lit for the season, where the walls seem to echo with elf laughter. These passages are known to only a handful of people outside the workshop. Along the way you'll find hidden corners and the elves' workshop itself. Stay quiet and quick, and you might catch the little workers mid-mischief.

Finding Santa

Further in, the path starts to glow, a sign you're getting close. You'll come to a hidden chamber where Santa's sleigh waits for its Christmas Eve run. And then, at last, the bit everyone's been waiting for. In a warm, glowing hut, you meet Father Christmas. There's time to tell him your wishes and collect a gift to take home from your trip inside the mountain.

One last surprise

When you think it's all over, there's still the sledging. Everyone gets their own sledge for a run down the underground Christmas slope, which is a hard act to follow and a fitting way to end the day. After that, there's a festive treat to warm up with and time for a few photos before the bus takes you back down the mountain.

Perfect for families with young children. No upper age limit on magic.

Terrain

Rough & uneven

Steep steps with handrails. It isn't wheelchair accessible. Wear strong boots or shoes and warm, waterproof clothing. Helmets and lamps are handed out when you arrive.

Arrive early

Arrive 30 mins before

This is a full experience, not a quick visit. Give yourself plenty of time. Santa won't be rushed, and you shouldn't be either.

All-weather activity

Wrap up warm for the journey up. Inside the grotto, stay warm whatever December throws at the fells.

What to expect

From the car park to the grotto. Here's how the day unfolds.

Step 1

The chief elf is waiting

Arrive at the foot of Honister Pass. The chief elf welcomes you onto the bus and takes you up to a secret opening in the hillside. The adventure has begun, and the mountain holds more than you'd think.

Step 2

Ancient passageways & glittering lights

You twist and turn through passageways that sparkle with light and laughter. Keep an eye out for the magical beings who live down here, the elves' secret workshop is hidden somewhere in the dark.

Step 3

The Big Man, in his grotto.

The hidden chamber glows with festive warmth. Santa is there, sleigh packed, ready for the big night. Make a wish, post your letter, and collect your special gift. This is the moment.

Step 4

One last thrill on the way out

Down the underground sledging slope and back into the winter air, gift in hand, reindeer food in your pocket, and a memory that'll last until next Christmas. Possibly longer.
