The Rare Craft That Built Cumbria – and the Family Keeping It Alive

Hidden high in the heart of the Lake District, where the clouds brush the peaks and the wind carries centuries of stories, lies a place like no other. Honister Slate Mine is more than just a working mine – it’s a beating heart of heritage, adventure, and a family’s unbreakable passion to preserve a disappearing craft.

Where Tradition Meets the Treetops

For generations, Honister Green Slate has helped shape Cumbria – quite literally. From rooftops to landmarks, this unique stone has been part of the region’s identity for centuries. But traditional slate mining, once a booming trade, is now a rarity in England. Honister stands alone as the last of its kind.

Nearly 30 years ago, local man Mark Weir, whose grandfather once worked the very same fells, saw more than just stone in the abandoned mine. He saw history. He saw potential. And he made it his mission to bring Honister back to life – not just as a working slate mine, but as a living tribute to the people, skills, and stories that shaped the Lake District.

Though Mark tragically passed away in 2011, his vision lives on through his sons, Prentice and Piers, who have carried the torch with grit and heart.

More Than a Mine – It’s an Experience

Today, Honister is a destination unlike any other. Yes, it’s still very much a working mine – one where master stonemasons continue the age-old art of crafting slate by hand – but it’s also a place of awe-inspiring adventure.

From the underground wonder of guided mine tours to the thrill of the Via Ferrata Xtreme, Climb the Mine, and the Infinity Bridge, visitors are invited to walk quite literally in the footsteps of miners who carved their way through 450-million-year-old rock.

Every corner of the experience tells a story – of resilience, ingenuity, and the deep connection between the land and the people who’ve worked it.

Slate for the Future

It’s not just tourists who value Honister’s slate. Organisations like Historic England rely on it for vital restoration work, ensuring historic buildings across the UK are preserved with the same material that originally built them. It’s a partnership that helps keep traditional skills alive while securing the mine’s future.

And behind it all? A dedicated local team who live and breathe the mountains – come rain, shine, or snowstorm.

Coming Soon: A New Way to Soar

The latest chapter in Honister’s story is about to take flight – literally. After 15 years in the making, the much-anticipated Lancaster Aerial zip wire has finally received the green light. This thrilling new addition promises to give visitors a completely new perspective of the Lake District’s rugged beauty.

Whether you’re seeking a high-adrenaline adventure, a deeper connection to Cumbrian heritage, or simply a chance to do something truly unforgettable, Honister offers it all – with authenticity, heart, and a view that’ll stay with you long after you’ve left.

A Living Legacy

Honister Slate Mine isn’t just about slate or adventure. It’s about family. About community. About remembering where we’ve come from, while daring to dream where we can go next.

So the next time you’re in the Lake District, take a detour into history. You might just find yourself inspired by the rare craft – and the rare people – that continue to shape Cumbria.
