Set in the heart of the Lake District, the Bowels of Fleetwith returns on Saturday 5th July 2025 for its fifth edition – offering fell runners a challenge unlike any other. Starting at Honister Slate Mine, 20 minutes from Keswick, this 6km race takes competitors over two legendary Wainwright fells – Fleetwith Pike (648m) and Grey Knotts (697m) – and deep into 1km of underground mine tunnels, a route that’s normally off-limits to the public. A climb through a mine shaft will see runners emerge partway up Fleetwith, before continuing the ascent, traversing to Grey Knotts, and racing back down to Honister.
With an entry fee of just £30 per person, this one-of-a-kind race is set to be an unforgettable experience for fell runners looking for something truly different.
The Race of a Lifetime
Starting at the historic Honister Slate Mine, competitors will don helmets and head torches to tackle the first challenge: a half-mile uphill sprint leading into the underground mine entrance. But this isn’t your typical fell race—it’s a journey through 1km of winding tunnels, steep inclines, and vast chambers, a route carefully designed by the Honister team to create an experience like no other. What makes it truly special? This is the only fell race in the UK that takes you inside a mountain, combining underground adventure with high-altitude summits for a challenge you won’t find anywhere else.
As you navigate the mines, you’ll encounter twists, turns, and challenges that will test your endurance and courage. But don’t worry, the route is carefully crafted to ensure safety while offering a thrilling experience beyond comparison.
From Depths to Summits
Once you’ve completed the underground portion, it’s time to leave the mine and head out into the open air. As you emerge halfway up Fleetwith Pike, you’ll remove your helmet and headtorch before continuing the race to the top of Fleetwith Pike (648m). From there, continue on to Grey Knotts (697m) before descending back to Honister Slate Mine, where a well-earned drink awaits you.
This race isn’t for the faint of heart. It’s just over 5km with 1500m of ascent, but it promises to be one of the most unforgettable experiences you’ll ever have!
For All Adventurers Aged 16 and Over
The race is open to anyone aged 16 and over, with the caveat that competitors under 18 must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Whether you’re a seasoned fell runner or a newcomer looking for a new kind of challenge, this race is designed for all levels. Just bring your spirit of adventure and prepare to push your limits!
Honister’s Bowels of Fleetwith fell race is more than just a race – it’s an adventure, a challenge, and an experience that you’ll never forget.
